It was in 1792, that the women’s rights activist, Mary Wollstonecraft, wrote the passionate ‘Vindication of The Rights of A Woman’. Since then, the idea of gender equality has forever gained new currents, has become more inclusive, and has learnt to be more assertive with its demands.

In the 21st century, the struggle for the right to work and equal wages has been joined by authors, activists, and icons from the entertainment industry. This international women’s day, here’s covering a few memorable women who have lent their voice to the movement.

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama

The former First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) has been rather vocal about the need for educating girls, especially in developing communities. The mother-of-two has also been vocal about creating leadership opportunities for women, and is a role model for mothers around the world.

Interestingly, Michelle talks about the missing concept of intersectionality in feminism. “As women, we must stand up for each other,” she said in a speech made at the State Department Women of Courage Awards, 2009.

Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem

“A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle,” is Steinem’s witty comeback for people who believe women are dependent on men. Gloria Steinem has been a tireless campaigner for women’s rights ever since the 60s, and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. A good hair spa could get you Steinem’s classy, Mad Men-style hair, but to emulate her requires real spunk.

Oprah Winfrey, international womens day

Oprah Winfrey

The eponymous host and anchor of the famous Oprah Winfrey Show, Winfrey is engaged in serious dedication to women empowerment. When the famous television personality started her broadcasting career, unequal pay was rampant at the industry. This was what inspired her to take up the baton of women’s rights at the workplace. In 2013, Oprah was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Patricia Arquette, International Women's Day

Patricia Arquette

Only days ago, Meryl Streep made a powerful speech at the Golden Globes, speaking up against US president Donald Trump. The trend of remarkable women, ripping bigotry and patriarchy apart on stage isn’t new. In 2015, Patricia Arquette, a long time champion of equal pay for women in the entertainment industry, spoke out against the male-female binary in the industry. Arquette has lashed out at women of color not being given equal opportunities in the entertainment industry.

Kerry Washington, Scandal, International women's day

Kerry Washington

The ‘Scandal’ actress has hit out boldly against violence against women and unequality at the workplace. Being an active part of a number of campaigns against domestic violence, Washington also has an all-inclusive take on feminism, and believes in taking up one’s own brand of feminism.

A true role model in every sense of the term, Washington is often spotted doling out advice on hair care, too and is a firm believer of shampooing consistently and natural scalp treatment. Due to her influence, many women have been seen sporting natural curls lately, made popular by Washington.

Here at PHS Hairscience, we share the respect and admiration for these iconic figures speaking up for a good cause too. In support of this global movement, PHS Hairscience is proud to be the sponsor for Women Entreprenuer Awards (WEA) 2017, celebrating the successes of women.

The WEA is not just another award in the market but a community where women come together to support one another by organising symposiums and networking sessions for new business owners. Held once every two years, the winners will be awarded mentorship programme such as potential education and internship opportunities.
